About IKS
The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) refers to the vast body of knowledge, practices, and wisdom that has evolved in India over thousands of years. It's a rich tapestry encompassing diverse domains such as:

 * Philosophy and Spirituality: Including the six systems of Indian philosophy (Darshanas), Vedanta, Yoga, Dharma, Karma, and the pursuit of truth (Satya) and wisdom (Prajñā).

 * Sciences and Mathematics: Pioneering concepts like zero, the decimal system, advanced trigonometry, astronomy (e.g., Earth's rotation), and contributions to fields like physics and chemistry.

 * Medicine and Healthcare: Most notably Ayurveda, a holistic system of medicine focused on balancing body, mind, and spirit.

 * Arts and Architecture: Including various forms of music, dance, drama, and principles of construction and design.

 * Literature and Languages: With foundational texts like the Vedas, Upanishads, and epic poems, as well as sophisticated grammatical traditions like Panini's.

 * Social and Cultural Practices: Including traditional governance (e.g., Kautilya's Arthashastra), agricultural practices, and environmental sustainability.

Key Aspects and Evolution:

 * Ancient Roots: IKS finds its origins in the Vedic period (circa 1500–500 BCE) with the compilation of the Vedas, considered foundational texts.

 * Holistic Approach: It emphasizes interconnectedness and harmony between individuals, society, and nature, often with a focus on the "wellbeing of all" (Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah).

 * Experiential Learning: Knowledge was often developed through observation, experimentation, rigorous analysis, and experiential learning in institutions like Gurukulas and universities like Nalanda.

 * Transmission: Knowledge was preserved and disseminated through oral traditions ("Shruti" - heard) and written texts ("Smriti" - memory), passed down through generations.

 * Interdisciplinary Nature: IKS often integrated different fields, recognizing their interdependence.

Modern Relevance:

In recent years, there has been a significant push to revive, research, and integrate IKS into modern education and society. This aligns with initiatives like India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The relevance of IKS today stems from:

 * Cultural Preservation and Pride: Fostering a sense of identity and appreciation for India's rich heritage.

 * Holistic Development: Offering frameworks for understanding the world that go beyond purely analytical skills, promoting emotional balance, physical health, and inner stability.

 * Addressing Contemporary Challenges: Providing time-tested insights and sustainable solutions for issues like stress, ecological imbalance, healthcare, and ethical living.

 * Cognitive Enrichment: Practices like Yoga and meditation, rooted in IKS, have been scientifically shown to enhance cognitive function and reduce stress.

 * Innovation: Bridging traditional wisdom with modern knowledge to find unique and effective solutions in various fields.

The Indian Knowledge System is actively being promoted by a division of the Ministry of Education of the Government of India, established in October 2020, to encourage interdisciplinary research, preservation, and dissemination of this valuable intellectual heritage.
